February Extra Post

This month was dedicated to my first independent component and I am almost finished with it. I will most likely spend the last two hours composing my component. I have been through the entire grading process from start to finish and have seen the various factors that affect profit. Near Thirty hours. At my mentorship i have moved away from reading boring reports to analysing construction plans and blueprints. This is actually quite the challenging activity and is great for deepening my understanding of the grading process. This is actually making me rethink my second independent component. Doing something based on plans would be much easier. But that is a bridge i will cross later. It should also be stated that i have completed my 60 mentorship hours.February has been a very productive month and i will soon be back on track with my project.

Blog 16: Answer 2

1.  What is your EQ? What is the most important factor in ensuring a profit in a grading operation?

2.  What is your first answer? : The most effective way to ensure a profit in a grading operation is proper estimation, in order to not under bid. Underbidding will destroy profit.

3.what is your second answer?:  proper pre-construction planning effectively  ensures a profit through preventing costly errors during the construction process.

4.  List three reasons your answer is true with a real-world application for each.
1. It is extremely important to know the exact specifics of a construction site especially considering how they are updated often. If you fail to build according to the specifics than quite the expensive legal battle will ensue.
2.Proper planning allows the entire process to run smoothly. Time is a very important factor in construction and delays can ruin your profit margin.
3. Proper planning also increases efficiency in the construction process allowing less time and money to be wasted.

5.  What printed source best supports your answer?
http://www.mpgroup.com/documents/guidelines.pdf
This paper by contractors of america goes in depth on the entire construction process and all through out showed how proper planning was important in each section of the construction process. It showed my how integral planning is to construction.

6.What other source supports your answer?
http://www.aecom.com/deployedfiles/Internet/Capabilities/Program,%20Cost,%20Consultancy/Cost/Procurement_SuccessfulProjects_10Feb06.pdf
This paper from aecom further supports my answer though showing the various pitfall grading operations face. Time and time again it mentions how proper planning can prevent 95% of the encountered problems. Planning has become a common theme for success.

7. Tie this together with a  concluding thought.

Proper planning has been a common theme of successful construction projects in my research. Time and time again it has also been stated that lack of planning is a common pitfall. Because pitfalls will ruin profit and must be avoided, proper pre construction planning is the second answer to my EQ.

Blog 15: Independent Component 2 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours
For my second independent component I plan to become more intimate with the financial as well as planning side of contract grading. By becoming more well versed with the ins and outs of construction finance i can better understand what goes into making a profit and how one can be ensured. In order to get thirty hours i will look for patterns in the multitude of financial reports from previous jobs in order to see where money historically lost or gained. I will see where certain jobs succeeded and others failed and discuss with my mentor past projects that succeeded or failed and what the company learned from such experience. I will probably then place these findings in a very nice chart.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

I will be looking over the thousands of finance reports in the office and recording where things went well and vice versa looking for patterns. I will also spend a lot of time just talking to my mentor on ways profit is ensure in the grading business.

3. This component basically is a search for the answer to my eq. "What is the best way to ensure a profit in a grading operation" By looking through financial reports i can see where the company succeed in making a profit and if there is a successful pattern. I am going directly to the source and searching through raw data to understand how a profit is made and the best way to do so.

Side note- im still collecting hours for component one my mothers death set me behind, terribly sorry.
